Cal’s heart beat out of her chest. Racing to the foyer, her hand was already extended when she greeted the president. “Mr. President I am so excited. I am a huge fan.”

“Thank you.”

“Cal,” jake said.

“Yes.”

“Here.” He handed her the vase from the foyer table. “Hold that. Cover that stain.”

Cal cradled it against her.

The president stifled a laugh. “It really is alright.”

“No, it is not, sir. She has this terrible habit and it’s every single shirt.”

The president looked at Cal. “My wife did the same thing.”

“It’s because I’m so big. There are two in there.”

“Two?” The president asked. “Congratulations. That’s wonderful. Everything going well?”

“Yes. Well, the Baby B has three arms.”

“Cal,” Jake said stern. “The baby does not have three arms. It was the arm of Baby A. I … am sorry, sir.”

“It’s quite alright, I won’t take up your time.”

“We have company,” Cal said. “Would you be able to say hello to them?”

“Cal, the man is busy.”

“It’s fine,” the president said. “I’d be happy to. But first, look…” he faced Jake. “I know what you did. I also know the life of service that you have given to this country. I also believe it is unfair the punishment handed down to you. So I am pardoning the insubordination, it will be wiped clean from your record.”

Cal watched as a wave of relief swept over Jake so much so it physically showed.

“Thank you, sir.”

“And …” the president continued. “You will be reinstated as Lieutenant Colonel. Everything will be official by tomorrow afternoon.”

This time Jake exhaled loudly. “Sir, thank you very much.”

“I will have my personal secretary call you tomorrow morning to set up a call with me. I’d like to get you down to Washington DC this week for a few days and discuss how we can get you on my team at the pentagon.”

Jake said nothing.

Cal saw it. He wanted to scream in excitement and it took everything he had to stay in control.

“Jake?” The president called his name. “Would that be alright?”

“That would be amazing, sir.”

“You don’t sound excited.”

“I am very excited.”

“Trust me,” Cal said. “The pentagon is his dream. He wants to be in the White House.”

“Political ambitions.” The president gave a closed mouth smile. “Then this is a good start.”

“Thank you again.” Jake extended his hand.

“My pleasure. Thank you. Now …” the president said. “Let’s go meet those friends.”

Cal waved out her arm in a point. “After you. Straight down the hall.” She walked behind the president and noticed Jake was still standing there. She stopped and looked at him. “Jake.”

“In a minute. I’m composing myself to contain excitement.”

“I’m proud of you.”

“Thank you. I …”

Cal saw the cringe on Jake’s face when Rickie’s loud, ‘Bob!’ Rang out from the kitchen. She left him alone to absorb his news and Cal, still holding that vase, hurried to rescue the president.
